I know the contract says 37.5 hours but I believe that this isn't really the case. There doesn't seem to be a direct answer. Is it possible to have a realistic answer to what I can expect? Or what you have experienced personally? Sept to Jan - normal? 9-5:30? Jan - April - around 70 hours? April - sept - normal? 9-5:30? Would this be a realistic expectation? Is this all in the office or can I work from home? What happens when you get older and start having more commitments? e.g. family Thanks

Hi, I think there's an element of urban myth to this. For the most part hours are in line with contracts (for a full time employee between 35 and 37.5 hours). But like with any role in this industry there are some busier times between Jan and April - and whilst 70 hour weeks aren't unheard of - having them for 3 months in a row isn't realistic. It is more likely that you will work longer hours a handful of weeks a year - and usually it will not be 70 hours, but may go slightly over your contract - a couple of hours a day in a busy period. As for family and other commitments - work life balance is something that we strive for as a business and any none work commitments can be accommodated for by speaking to your line manager. As for the working from home point this is kind of hard to answer given what's going on in the world right now - who knows what the return to office life will really look like - but pre Covid-19 there was a flexible working charter in place which allowed any employee the right to work from home one day a week without seeking approval and any further time spent at home could be requested. In my experience the best place to learn is in the office with the team around but flexible working is encouraged where suitable.
