What is "Private - FS" tax like?
Additional information
Hi Ryan, I have an interview for the tax graduate program, and had been told I am interviewing for Tax - Private - FS (I was not asked to choose any particular line, I guess was just assigned it). Would you be able to tell me a little bit more about the particularities of working in the Private, Financial Services division? Does the work differ from other service lines (ie more or less legal advisory, more or less numerical work), and what kind of work is involved that might set it apart from other divisions? I understand this may not be your area of expertise, but any kind of high-level view would be helpful! Thanks, Felix

Hi Felix,
This would be correct about the service line decision. When I applied for tax - UKI - it was determined by the capacity of each team at that given point in the year as to who needed a grad to join and who didn't. Sometimes this is a centralized decision by EY, sometimes each team reach out to recruitment to highlight that they require a grad to join for the next intake. Private tax within FS is where you say you have been placed. So private tax tends to deal with high net worth individuals who require assistance in completing and managing their financial affairs/ self assessment tax returns and so on. Being part of FS over UKI simply narrows down the types of clients who you will be dealing with. FS within EY deal with banks, investment funds. UKI deal with everything else i.e. companies/partnerships etc.
I would not be fully comfortable to comment with specifics, as you elude to, this is not my area. However, from my colleagues in Private UKI tax - there is a slightly higher technical need than certain other sub service lines. Please do not worry about this though as the professional training you will undertake as a grad would set you up very well for this. We do have many many teams within EY so I believe the legal compliance you mention would to passed to the appropriate legal team within the business allowing you to focus on your own area of skill. Private tax is slightly set apart from other lines in the firms in that they are dealing within individuals, many of whom are executives and as mentioned, high net worth individuals. The opportunities for networking are extremely high from this regard.
Hopefully this helps a little but please do reach out if you have any further questions. I suggest a quick LinkedIn search of your job title, filtered for EY (and possibly location) to see if you can find any specific contacts for whom you may be working with.
