How might someone with a bioengineering and biomedical research background apply their experience within the Microsoft Service Group, particularly in relation to life sciences or healthcare-focused projects?

Anonymous asked a question to Charlotte D.

Hi Charlotte, I have been offered an interview for the Tech Consulting - Microsoft Service Group, which I’m excited to learn more about. I wanted to ask how someone with a background in bioengineering and biomedical research might best apply their experience within this area. My PhD has focused on biofabrication and bioengineering, so I’m particularly interested in understanding whether there are opportunities to work with clients in the life sciences or healthcare sectors, or on projects where a scientific background could add value. I’d really appreciate any insight into how people with STEM research backgrounds typically fit into the team, and the kinds of projects or industries I might have exposure to. Many thanks

Hello, thank you for your question!

Whilst I can't comment specifically on your academic background, I do wish to reassure you that within EY you will be able to shape your career to best suit your interests as you progress within your role.

When starting out, there may be less scope to pick your specific clients (although I imagine there will be STEM clients in the role you've gone for), but as you gain experience, you will be able to work with your counsellor to focus your interests where you feel best suited. This could be inside or outside of the role, such as through secondments. And this could absolutely open opportunities to work with life sciences or the healthcare sector specifically.

I'd suggest networking too is a great way to meet people working with clients you find particularly interesting.

However, please be confident that your STEM experience will be applicable to your role, even if the client themselves isn't an obvious link at first, and anyone you work with will be a fantastic grounding to start your career, even if you wish to focus on STEM clients as you progress.

Congratulations on securing an interview, that is very exciting, and I wish you the very best of luck!

Brilliant, thank you so much for taking the time to respond! It's good to know that EY offers the flexibility to work towards specialising in a particular area, and that the wealth of background knowledge amongst all employees is valuable accross multiple sectors. I had a lovely interview experience and your response helped me feel confident that my skill set was applicable in this industry!
