Hi Shrikar, great question! Tax can cover a lot of areas such as indirect tax (VAT) and corporation tax, so even within tax the specific skill sets can differ from a knowledge perspective. However, both assurance and tax have overlap in soft skills and competencies (using excel and other software's). Furthermore, both require fundamental accounting knowledge, which you will cover in your professional qualification :)

Would u say for tax, being competent in IT is important, or is that a skill you pick up on during the training?

I would say being competent in excel and other Microsoft platforms is important across all areas, however no-one will expect you to have anything other than basic knowledge when you join and EY provide you with tons of learning materials upon joining to help you grow in that area

audit associate
To add on to what Ben has said, there's lots of training you can do on various different systems to develop your skills on that platform. You are constantly picking up new skills and shortcuts to make you work faster.
